Puppies develop rapidly in their first two years, but basic learning starts incredibly early—around two weeks old!
The period between 4 and 12 weeks is known as the socialization stage, and this time is vital for developing a dog's long-term emotional and psychological health. During this critical time, puppies:
-
Form strong bonds.
-
Develop their fear responses.
-
Learn about social hierarchies.
Since puppies are most open to new experiences during this window, it's the best time to start basic training and to introduce them to the world around them!
If you adopt an older dog who missed out on early socialization, you can still use the same socialization principles to help them confidently experience new people, places, and things.

Cooperative care is often an overlooked aspect of dog training. So, what is it? Cooperative care involves training your dog to not only tolerate handling and husbandry procedures but also to be a willing and active participant in these experiences. Routine care for your dog includes things like ear cleaning, getting shots, nail trimming, vet examinations and so much more. Throughout your dog's life they will need to be handled by people (they often don't know) for their own health and safety. Providing them with the tools to navigate these situations confidently goes a long way in enhancing the owner bond and ensures that in the event of an emergency you can safetly get your dog the help it needs.

Dogs can be absolutely wonderful companions for children, but it is important to make sure a safe and respectful relationship is fostered. Not only for the safety of your human child but for your dog as well. We have put together some tips to help advocate for your canine family member as well as some fun ways for your child (or children from outside your home) to enjoy your dog. It is also important to remember that not all dogs enjoy attention from children and there is nothing wrong with putting your dog in a safe quiet place when you know younger ones will be present. Safety is always the priority.
